United Healthcare had announced earlier this year that they would no longer process or pay on consultation codes 99241-99245 and 99251-99255, to be effective October 1, 2017. However, in their October bulletin, UHC states “In an effort to give care providers more time to adjust…UHC will be delaying implementation of the revisions to the Reimbursement Policy for services reported with consultation codes.” Despite this delay, we do expect UHC will move forward with this plan to no longer cover consultation codes in the near future. CMS discontinued coverage of consultation codes in 2010 and this is a likely trend that we will see from other payers as well.
