According to the AMA, CMS took a big step toward unleashing the potential of digital medicine when it added CPT code 99091, for remote patient monitoring, to the 2018 Medicare physician fee schedule. While there are certain stipulations for appropriately using CPT 99091, this is a significant step toward industry acceptance of telehealth as “a cost effective and reliable means to expand capacity in a healthcare system marked with significant and persistent specialty shortages and geographic disparities.” (as stated by the AMA in a letter to CMS Administrator, Seema Verma).
