As part of the Patients over Paperwork initiative, CMS has proposed a 2019 change in reimbursement methodology for the 10 new and established patient visit codes (99201-99205 and 99211-99215). The revision would apply a single payment rate for level 2 through 5 office visits. The rationale behind this proposal is CMS’s claim that the current system of 10 visit codes for office visits is outdated and that documentation requirements will be simplified under the new rules. To date, the AMA and other physician specialty organizations continue to voice their opposition as CMS evaluates feedback on the potential impact. At this time, CMS has delayed further considerations of the consolidated E&M rates until 2020.
