The federal government’s expansion of telehealth coverage over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic was done so through temporary waivers. The waiver that allows all Medicare beneficiaries to use telehealth services from their homes is set to expire mid-January. According to Modern Healthcare, while there is broad agreement in the value of telehealth care, it is unclear whether Congress will decide to approve Medicare’s coverage of telehealth permanently, or only for a few years (as more data can be compiled on the efficacy and costs of telehealth). President Joe Biden is expected to renew the coverage for at least 90-days more upon the mid-January expiration.
