Access to primary care physicians is becoming increasingly difficult for patients across the country. Per Modern Healthcare, an estimated one-third of all physicians in the US are primary care doctors, and that percentage is decreasing. Today, a smaller number of physicians are entering the field than are practicing, suggesting that shortages will worsen over time. A recent survey found it now takes an average of 21 days to get in to see a doctor of family medicine. Patients are seeking care form “retail clinics” offered at Walgreens and CVS more than ever – studies show the use of retail clinics has increased 200% over the past five years. However, these care models raise concerns over the lack of a traditional patient / physician relationship and the benefits of building a history with a healthcare provider.
