The DOJ is investigating allegations UnitedHealth Group profited from its ties between United Healthcare and Optum physician groups. The investigation looks to determine if United Healthcare gained more than the 15-20% of Medicare premiums payers are permitted to keep by absorbing additional profit through reimbursement for services. As part of the investigation, DOJ is also looking at Optum’s 90,000 physicians and how these acquisitions impacted local competition; specifically if the payer gave favorable contracts to Optum providers.
