Health insurance companies are threatening double digit premium increases for 2017 policies purchased under the ACA. While coverage through Healthcare.gov and state exchanges offer subsidies based on income, the cutoffs for assistance are $47,520 for individuals and $97,200 for a family of four. With more than 12 million customers enrolled nationwide, premium increases estimated to be from 9-37% pose a significant threat to many. The Federal government contends that insurer requests for such premium increases will be rejected, and that the statistics used by the insurers to justify their premium hikes “are not a reliable indicator of what typical consumers will actually pay.”
