Elevance Health (formerly named Anthem, Inc) has hired its first “food as medicine” director to advance the goal of addressing chronic conditions among its 47 million members while reducing costs. In a recent interview with Modern Healthcare, Dr. Kofi Essel discussed the plan to design “an enterprise-wide strategy to use food solutions to address a variety of diet related conditions”…including hypertension, obesity and diabetes. As noted by the doctor, diabetes costs the US health system more than $300 billion a year and will be a primary focus of the Elevance food and nutrition intervention programs.
