Pharmaceutical spending accounts for approximately 11% of total personal health care services spending in the United States according to a 2022 study by the US Government Accountability Office (up from about 7% in the 1990’s). Health systems, insurers and pharmacy benefit managers are desperate to reduce drug costs. The Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Co. (aka Cost Plus Drugs) has taken on the roles of online pharmacy, pharmaceutical manufacturer and drug wholesaler in a bid to disrupt the healthcare industry. Cost Plus Drugs mostly focuses on generic oral and topical medicines, which it sells at cost, plus a 15% markup and a labor and shipping fee. Cost Plus Drugs is expanding into more brand-name pharmaceuticals and injectable drugs expecting greater savings opportunities for the dozen plus partnerships that have been established over the past three years.
